Petrol is the regulated pump price; diesel and paraffin are wholesale prices, so a forecourt sets its own retail price; LPG is the maximum retail price per kilogram. In rand, with the fuel and Road Accident Fund levies; petrol, diesel and paraffin carry no VAT (they’re zero-rated), and LPG includes it.

How fuel prices are set

Fuel prices are regulated. On the first Wednesday of every month the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources adjusts them, mostly for the oil price and the rand over the month before. Each of the 54 Magisterial District Zones adds its own zone differential, the cost of transporting fuel there from the coast, so prices rise the further inland you go.
