Terms of use

These terms are the agreement between you and Unmapped Labs when you use unmapped.co.za, create an account, or use our data through the portal or the API. If you use them for a company, you accept these terms for that company and confirm you may. Please read them: they say what you may do with the data, and what you may not.

In short

1. About us

Unmapped Labs is a sole proprietorship. Address, including for legal notices: Cape Town, South Africa. Email: hello@unmappedlabs.com. Website: unmapped.co.za. We build South African datasets from official and public sources and deliver them through an online portal and an API. We don’t belong to any self-regulatory body or subscribe to a code of conduct.

The service is free while it is in early access. Before anything costs money, we’ll show you the price, what’s included and how to pay, and you’ll choose whether to buy. Nothing is charged automatically.

2. Accounts

3. Using the data

While you have an account and keep to these terms, we give you a non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the data you switch on:

You may not, yourself or through anyone else:

We own the datasets as compilations: how we select, check, structure, join and document the information, and our software, website and documentation. The underlying facts and the official documents they come from aren’t ours, and nothing in these terms limits what you may do with information you get from the original source yourself. Some datasets are built from openly licensed data. Where that licence gives you rights in the underlying data, it applies to that data, and these terms don’t take those rights away; the dataset page or record will name the licence.

4. The API and limits

The API gives records a page at a time, within a daily limit for each account across all its keys. The portal shows your current limits. We may change limits, and we may contact you, slow down or suspend access if usage looks like copying the data rather than using it. We keep a count of the calls and records each key receives to run the service, apply the limits and check that these terms are kept, as our privacy notice explains.

We aim to keep the service running, but early access comes without a promise of availability. Planned changes to the API that would break what you’ve built will be announced in advance where we can.

5. Accuracy

We check every record against the source it cites, show that source, and flag where sources disagree or leave something out. Still, sources can contain mistakes, change without notice, be set aside or be published late, and we can make mistakes too. The data is information, not legal, financial, engineering or other professional advice. Check what matters against the source before you rely on it, and tell us if you find an error: we’ll fix it and note it in the record’s history.

6. Personal information in the data

Some datasets name people in a public or professional role, as their public source does. If you use such data, you are responsible for doing so lawfully under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013, including its rules on direct marketing (section 69). You may not use the data to identify, profile or contact private individuals in ways the law doesn’t allow, or combine it to reveal information that the sources don’t publish. How we handle personal information is set out in our privacy notice.

7. Liability

To the extent the law allows:

Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law doesn’t allow to be limited, such as for gross negligence or fraud, or takes away rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act, 2008 or the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, 2002 where they apply to you.

8. Suspension and ending

You may stop using the service and delete your account in the portal at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts the service or other users at risk, or that we must close by law; where we reasonably can, we’ll tell you first and give you a chance to put things right. When an account ends, your licence to use the data ends with it, except for records already built into your own products and reports before then, which you may keep using for those purposes. Sections 3 (the restrictions), 5, 6 and 7 continue after an account ends.
