About these rates
Each business day the South African Reserve Bank publishes the rand’s exchange rates as the weighted average of the banks’ rates at about 10:30. They’re the reference many contracts, invoices and reports use. They aren’t the rate your bank will give you: that includes its margin.
The nominal effective exchange rate measures the rand against a basket of the currencies of South Africa’s main trading partners, as an index (2022 = 100). It stood at 99.22 on 30 October 2026, against 96.28 a year earlier: higher means a stronger rand.
From the Reserve Bank’s published time series, every business day since 4 January 2016, checked against its headline rates. This page shows the latest release of our exchange rates dataset.
