About wards and municipalities
South Africa has 257 municipalities: 8 metropolitan municipalities (Category A), and 205 local municipalities (Category B) grouped into 44 district municipalities (Category C). Every metro and local municipality is divided into wards, each electing a ward councillor: 4,468 under the 2021 boundaries, and 4,485 under the 2026 boundaries.
The Municipal Demarcation Board redraws ward boundaries before each local government election, so a place can move to a different ward, or a ward can change its number. The answer here is for the wards in force on the day; the API also answers for any date.
Boundaries: Municipal Demarcation Board, simplified by Unmapped Labs to 5 metres, so a point a few metres from a boundary may fall either side of it. For legal or official purposes, confirm with the MDB. Our ward boundaries dataset has every ward, municipality and district.
